Inside My Gorge: The Original Rhinestone Cowboy

Anatomical Theatres of Mixed Reality (ATOM-r) will generatively excavate their new work-in-progress, The Beautiful Holy Jewel Home of the Original Rhinestone Cowboy, an augmented reality performance exploring the history of 360 degree views including panoramas, cycloramas, and visionary artist-made spaces to create a poetics of queer embodiment and dazzling camouflage.

In the late 1970’s, the American self-taught artist Loy Bowlin designated himself "the original rhinestone cowboy." Adopting the persona from Glen Campbell’s 1975 hit song, he intricately bedazzled his house, car, clothing, and dentures, creating a ubiquitous excess to compensate for a profound loneliness. Using Bowlin’s original unoriginality as a starting point, ATOM-r creates glittering surfeits of language and image. Drawing upon the word gorge to suggest the ecosystem of a valley, an act of overindulgence, and a throat, the talk will explore the performative entanglement of human, animal and landscape.

ATOM-r (Anatomical Theatres of Mixed Reality) is a collective exploring 21st century embodiment through performance, language, and emerging technologies. The group was conceived in response to the historical architecture of early modern anatomical theaters, spaces designed for viewing human dissections and early surgical procedures. This physical and conceptual arrangement is used as a symbol throughout their work to explore histories and experiences of the body, sexuality, and prosthesis. Earlier works include The Operature (2014), which explores the preservation and encryption of sex acts in the archives of writer and pornographer, Samuel Steward; and Kjell Theøry (2017), a performance that juxtaposes Alan Turing’s mathematical explanation of embryo formation with The Tits of Tiresias, a 1917 genderqueer play in which a man gives birth to 40049 babies.

ATOM-r core members: Mark Jeffery (choreography), Judd Morrissey (text and technology), Justin Deschamps, Christopher Knowlton and Colin Roberson (collaborators/performers).
