Risto Pekka Pennanen on tutkija, jonka erikoisaloihin kuuluvat musiikin aate- ja sosiaalihistoria, ravintolamusiikin ja äänilevyteollisuuden historia, naisten ammattimuusikkous, soitintutkimus sekä historialliset äänimaisemat erityisesti Balkanilla ja Itävalta-Unkarissa. Hän on julkaissut yli 50 tutkimusartikkelia, ja hän valmistelee aiemman tutkimushankkeensa Music, Musicians, Soundscape and Colonial Policies in Habsburg Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1878–1918 summaavaa monografiaa.
