Leena Lampinen: The Selection of Choral Repertoire in One Lutheran Diocese in Northern Tanzania
Abstract of the written thesis
The aim of my ethnographic research is to find out factors that influence the selection of choral repertoire in one diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT). ELCT is one of the largest Lutheran churches in the world, and choirs form an important part of the church’s everyday activities.
This research is based on survey and interview material, though emphasizing the interviews, and the research participants are choir conductors from the North-Central Diocese of the ELCT. The survey material (n=105) was generated in Tanzania during the years 2014 and 2015, and interviews with ten choir conductors were conducted in March 2016.
The repertoire selection is a manifold question. I am approaching it from several viewpoints, including, for instance, individual, group related, institutional, liturgical, and historical aspects.
