Hannu Niemelä

Hannu Niemelä was born in Finland. He studied church music and operasinging at the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki 1979-83. He also studied by master classes of Matti Tuloisela, Kim Borg, Karl-Heinz Jarius and Hans Hotter.

Hannu Niemelä has sung at the Savonlinna Opera Festival (Finland) since 1980. He is guest solist of the Finish National Opera (FNO) since 1992. He studied in the IOS of the Opera Zurich. Since 1985 Hannu Niemelä had engagements in Germany: Karlsruhe, Mainz and Dortmund. Since 2002 he is working as free lancer.

Hannu Niemelä has appeared in opera and concerts, on radio and TV in almost all European countries and in USA, Mexico, Israel, Japan, Russia(Asia) and Kenya.

The repertoire of Hannu Niemelä includes the most great Verdi baritone roles (ao. Macbeth, Jago, Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra) and the heldenbaritone roles of R. Wagner (ao. Hans Sachs, Flying Dutchman, Amfortas) among the other opera repertoire. His concert repertoire includes as well Lied- as religious music.

Hannu Niemelä has recorded the main roles in ”Le Roi Arthus” of E. Chausson, in ”Kniefall in Warschau” of G. Rosenfeld, ”Macbeth” of E. Bloch in Germany and ”Messenius and Lucia” of O. Kortekangas and ”Kaivos” (The Mine) of E. Rautavaara in Finland.

Hannu Niemelä was Artistic Director of the Vexilla Regis Lohtaja Church Music Festival 1988-95 and he was Artist of the Year in Savonlinna Opera Festival 1999.

At present Hannu Niemelä is working as the Lecturer of Vocal Arts at the Sibelius-Academy.
