The Orchestra Academy of the Helsinki Music Centre and the close-knit cooperation between professional orchestras allow you to gain work experience. Content and objective of the programme
You can choose any of the following as your major subject: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, baritone horn or tuba.
Graduates from the Sibelius Academy know the essential repertoire, styles, techniques, and interpretations of their respective instrument as well as the key orchestra repertoire of Western art music. They work as both soloists or as versatile chamber and orchestra musicians and have acquired at least basic pedagogical competence.
Bachelor’s studies
During the three-year bachelor’s studies, you will study orchestral and ensemble performance, chamber music, structural awareness of music, music history, pedagogy and languages. You can also include optional and elective studies in your schedule. Performance and audition coaching and general training in career skills are part of your studies. The health of a musician is part of your study plan from the beginning.
You will receive 90 minutes of individual instruction per week. In addition to the lessons with your own teacher, you can also regularly attend masterclasses taught by visiting teachers. You will also receive instruction in your subsidiary instrument from a specialized teacher in this field.
Master’s studies
During the 2.5-year master’s studies, you will deepen your competence in your major subject. You may also choose optional studies in, e.g., orchestral performance, chamber music, contemporary music, early music instruments and performance practice. You may also deepen your knowledge in pedagogics.
You can also choose courses organised by the two other Uniarts Helsinki academies and complete joint studies that are available for all students.

Sibelius Junior Academy
This instrument is part of our Junior Academy, a national programme, which prepares young music students for studies in a higher education institution. In addition to studies in either a major subject or a main instrument, you will study ensemble playing, structural awareness of music and other subjects offered by the Sibelius Academy.
Doctoral studies
You can complete a licentiate and a doctoral degree at Uniarts Helsinki as a third-cycle degree. After graduating with a master’s degree, you can apply for doctoral studies in music and specialise in research-oriented, artistic or applied doctoral studies.
