Studen playing harp

Why study here?

The core of your harp studies is weekly one-on-one instruction given by the best teachers in the field. Graduates of the programme have the skills to work as an orchestra musician, soloist, chamber musician, or harp teacher. You can also complete a larger study module in pedagogical studies to work as a teacher.

Content and objective of the programme

The most important thing in your studies is that you learn to master your instrument. With this goal in mind, you will receive a 90-minute one-on-one harp lesson per week from our excellent teachers.  Besides the solo and chamber music repertoire you will gain a broad understanding of the central orchestral parts for the harp and learn to master contemporary music in collaboration with composers. You will also study structural awareness of music, music history, pedagogy and languages, as well as optional and elective studies. You will prepare for a career as an orchestra musician by participating in audition training and practice auditions. The health of a musician is part of your study plan from the beginning.

In addition to the lessons with your own teacher, you can also regularly attend master classes taught by visiting teachers. You will take part in the activities of our symphony orchestra already during your first year of studies.

You can also choose courses organised by the other two Uniarts Helsinki academies and complete joint studies that are available to all students.

High-quality facilities for harp studies

As a harp student, you will have access to the harpists’ own classroom at the Helsinki Music Centre, as well as another classroom where harp students have the primary booking right.

You can also apply for the right to borrow the valuable harp owned by the Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation, Salvi Iris Gold harp.

Our instrument collection is regularly maintained and includes the following high-quality instruments:
