Youth Choir Kamēr... has won the V International Harald Andersén Chamber Choir Competition

 

Latvian Youth Choir Kamēr..., conducted by Janis Liepins, has won the V International Harald Andersén Chamber Choir Competition held in the Helsinki Music Centre on September 23rd and 24th 2016.

The winning choir was awarded a price of 10 000 euros. New Dublin Voices, conducted by Bernie Sherlock, was awarded the second prize of 7 000 euros.

The third prize of the competition, 4 000 euros, was divided between two choirs: Estonian Collegium Musicale (conducted by Endrik Üksvärav) and Swedish St. Jacobs Ungdomskör, (conducted by Mikael Wedar).

In the preliminary round of the competition on September 23rd, all nine participating choirs perfomed the mandatory competition piece which was the third part Mais je suis mort of Riikka Talvitie’s composition Même mort (2002). The Society of Finnish Composers awarded a special prize of 1 000 € to the best performance of this composition. This prize was awarded to the New Dublin Voices. In addition, the Finnish Broadcasting Company awarded a prize to the best Finnish choir of the competition, which was Spira Ensemble, conducted by Kari Turunen.

Six choirs were chosen to the final competition round, held in the Helsinki Music Centre on September 24th. The competition was attended by nine choirs from Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden and Ireland. The results were announced in a Gala concert in the Helsinki Music Centre Concert hall on September 24th. In addition to performances by the competition choirs, the concert also featured the renowed Finnish vocal group Club for Five.

V International Harald Andersén Chamber Choir Competition is organized by the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. Pension Insurance Company Elo is the main cooperative partner of the competition. The jury consists of Fredrik Malmberg (Sweden), Ko Matsushita (Japan), Daniel Reuss (Germany), Marjukka Riihimäki (Finland) and Jaakko Mäntyjärvi (Finland).
