A festival of lights
In January, students from the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts and Aalto Arts contributed to the LUX Helsinki festival of lights with their production Lantern Park. Based on the idea of the LUX Helsinki artistic director, professor Markku Uimonen and curated by artist Kaisa Salmi, the Hesperia Park was flooded with light from hundreds of lanterns.
LUX Ratikka was a project by lighting design students Riikka Karjalainen, Alexander Salvesen and Meri Ekola. “The students designed a moving, psychedelic light phenomenon to roam around the Helsinki tram network in the darkness of night. We were thrilled to execute all these extremely demanding technical solutions in excellent cooperation with the Helsinki Tram Transport,” Uimonen says.
Preparation for the LUX Helsinki 2014 event began in 2013. The Lux IN exhibition displayed fascinating light phenomena on the balcony of the Cable Factory’s Merikaapelihalli. The works were conjured up by lighting design master’s students in the Light as Visual Art course.
