Chen Qu: If you can imagine it, you will be able to study it here

Practise, lessons, school… and repeat. Piano student Chen Qu’s everyday life consists of a lot of work but she is also enjoying her freetime in Helsinki.

”My piano teacher is a top professional but also a very kind person. He helps us develop our musicality in our own way – since we are all different. I feel like each one of his students is like a little tree – and he’s like the gardener helping us grow, trimming and cutting off excess branches to help us flourish.

We have lots of course opportunities. For example, as a classical pianist I’m currently also studying pop-jazz singing. Basically – whatever you can think of, you can study here to develop and become a versatile, comprehensive musician. One of the main reasons I chose the Sibelius Academy is, that you really don’t have to speak Finnish to study here, so language is not a barrier. As a student you get plenty of opportunities to perform as well – both inside and outside the school. The teachers have their own student concerts regularly and we also have opportunities to organize our own concerts. I also have some private students and as a piano teacher is not difficult to find private students here, so we will also have the possibility to work besides the studies.

I personally like to live in Helsinki – just the winter is a bit long and dark, but you’ll get through it if you keep energetic, maybe use extra vitamin D and so on. Picking mushrooms and blueberries has been a wonderful new experience to me!"
