Call for Applications to the Nordic Symposium on Artistic Research in Music

Kallio-Kuninkala, Uniarts Helsinki, 4–5 June 2019
Submission deadline: 31.01.2019

As a developer of artistry and research, the DocMus/MuTri Doctoral Schools of the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki foster and renews music at the highest level. We are a community of international, creative pioneers whose work is characterised by high quality. We are opening a call for proposals for the Nordic Symposium on Artistic Research in Music, organized by the Sibelius Academy. It takes place on 4–5 June 2019 in a beautiful country villa at Kallio-Kuninkala (http://www.kuninkala.fi/en/) that is part of the Sibelius Estate.

We look for proposals on a broad range of subjects within Artistic Research in Music. Proposals should be in the form of presentations (40 minutes in total duration) featuring artistic music-making as integral part of research. A well-maintained Steinway D is in the main room; music technology equipment can be arranged on request. Each presentation can be a group of maximum 3 people (due to practical constraints). If you are a group, please identify a lead person for contact.

We plan to have plenary sessions only (no parallel sessions), and use two rooms as venues where presentations alternate between them. Please note that you will have a maximum 40-minutes preparation/rehearsal time in the venue, immediately prior to your presentation. A technical assistant will be available for both the preparation and presentation parts. We welcome submissions from doctoral students, post-doctoral artist-researchers, and musicians with exploratory research projects, who are working or living in the Nordic countries. Proposals will be selected by an appointed panel on the basis of the art/research quality. We intend to notify you of its decisions by mid-March.

The Symposium is led by Professor Mieko Kanno and coordinated by Dr Elisa Järvi.

How to submit your proposal

You are requested to provide all the following documents:

  • A document which includes: your name(s), affiliated institution(s), title of your presentation, abstract (maximum 300 words), links (maximum 5) to your artistic outputs that are relevant to the proposed presentation.
  • A supplementary document (maximum 2 pages, minimum font size 11) on practicalities for your presentation, including: materials, technical and financial resources, implementation details (setup duration, how you plan to manage technically, for example) and possible staff resources. Please indicate clearly which materials/resources you bring with you and which ones you request the symposium to provide. Please be aware that particularly complex requirements may not be met by the symposium.
  • CV (maximum 2 pages, with minimum font size 11)
  • Summary list of artistic portfolio and publications (maximum 2 pages, with minimum font size 11)

Please gather together all the documents into a single PDF file. The deadline for submissions is 15:00 (Finnish time) on 31.01.2019. All submissions must be sent as single PDF files to email , with the subject title “Nordic Symposium on Artistic Research in Music”.
