Art history and sculpting students collaborate

In the autumn, the Academy of Fine Arts’ sculpting students invited University of Helsinki art history students to monitor and discuss the creative processes in which material moulds into a work of art.

This course was titled Avaruusmatka (Space travel) and it resulted in an e-book titled Avaruusmatka 2013–2014, with articles as well as drafts and images of the students’ artworks. The collaboration culminated in an exhibition at Galleria FAFA in April 2014.

“The articles by art history students added to and defined the sculpting students’ impressions of their works. The project did not aim at educating arts commentators or coaching artists to receive criticism. We wanted to equip explorers for their journey into the world of arts,” says Riikka Puronen, a lecturer in sculpting.
