Changes to Sibelius Academy’s admissions criteria March 16 2021

General information about changes

The admissions criteria have been changed in these programmes:

  • 5.5-year programme in Jazz (instrument or vocal studies)
  • 5.5-year and 2.5-year programme in Orchestral Conducting
  • 5.5-year and 2.5-year programme in Wind Orchestra Conducting
  • 5.5-year and 2.5-year programme in Choral Conducting
  • 5.5-year and 2.5-year programme in Music Education
  • 5.5-year programme in Music Technology
  • 5.5-year and 2.5-year programme in Church Music
  • 5.5-year and 2.5-year programme in Folk Music

The dean of the Sibelius Academy has accepted the admissions criteria of the 2021 admissions on 12 November 2020. According to the decision, if the University concludes that entrance examinations cannot be held on site in Helsinki and that all sub-tests of all entrance examinations will have to be arranged via remote connection, all applicants will be informed of this no later than 16 March 2021.

In the above-mentioned degree programmes, the auditions’ last stages include a high risk of virus infection, there are various sub-tests and the implementation of the tests require a large number of support staff such as choirs, orchestras, or teaching groups. In order to secure the safety of both the applicants and the staff in the deteriorating coronavirus situation, the last stages of the above-mentioned admissions will be organized remotely.

The schedule and the admissions criteria apart from the method of implementation of the tests will remain the same. The content of the entrance examinations is changed only when necessary due to the remote implementation.

Jazz, instrument or vocal studies, 5,5-year programme

The instrument/voice audition in the second stage of the admissions will be held via remote connection and a video assignment. Applicants invited to the second stage will be sent instructions for the remote connection and submitting the video assignment.

The test in music theory and aural skills and the brief interview in the second stage of the admissions will be held via remote connection.

Orchestral conducting, 5,5-year and 2,5-year programmes

Applicants selected to the final stage of the admissions will be sent detailed instructions regarding the video assignments and the sub-tests to be held via remote connection.

The individual aural skills and music theory test will be held via remote connection.

The main instrument audition will be a video recording.

The test in conducting and score playing will be held via remote connection.

Based on the point scores given for the conducting test and the main instrument audition, some of the applicants will be invited for an interview. The interview will be held via remote connection.

Choral conducting, 5,5-year and 2,5-year programmes

Applicants invited to the second stage will attend an individual test via remote connection. Detailed instructions will be sent with the invitation.

The sight-reading and transposition test will be held via remote connection.

The voice and instrument audition will be assessed based on the materials the applicant has submitted with their application.

The test in choral conducting will be assessed based on the materials the applicant has submitted with their application. Additionally, during the interview the applicant will be asked questions regarding a number of works sent in advance and asked to demonstrate conducting solutions for selected passages, as well as to conduct a technical exercise sent in advance.

The interview will be held via remote connection.

Wind orchestra conducting, 5,5-year and 2,5-year programme

The music theory and aural skills test will be held via remote connection.

The main instrument audition will be a video recording.

The test in conducting and score playing will be held via remote connection.

The interview will be held via remote connection.

Music technology, 5,5-year programme

The third stage of the admissions will be held via remote connection. Applicants invited to the third stage will receive detailed instructions with the invitation.

The remote connection workshops will contain exercises, discussions and assignments which are carried out individually or in a group.

The instrument or voice audition will be held via remote connection.

The interview will be held via remote connection.

Church music, 5,5-year programme

The second stage of the admissions will be carried out through video assignments (interview and aural skills, instrument and voice audition, demonstration of musical interaction with a group). Applicants selected for the second stage will receive the detailed instructions with the invitations two weeks prior to the assignments’ deadline at latest.

Church music, 2,5-year programme

The second stage of the admissions will be carried out through video assignments (liturgical music, interview and aural skills, choral conducting) and remote connection (writing skills). Applicants selected for the second stage will receive the detailed instructions with the invitations two weeks prior to the assignments’ deadline at latest.

Folk music, 5,5-year and 2,5-year programme

The second stage of the admissions will be held via remote connection. Applicants invited to the second stage will receive detailed instructions with the invitation. The second stage of the admissions consists of the following sub-tests: instrument and voice audition and interview, test on structural awareness of music, ensemble playing and teamwork test.
