Without a Shadow – Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra, cond. Leif Segerstam
Leif Segerstam, Professor of Orchestra Conducting at the Sibelius Academy from 1997 to 2013, returns to conduct the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra.
The opening number is a symphonic fantasy by Richard Strauss, an adaptation of emotionally powerful material from the opera Die Frau ohne Schatten, the ‘woman without a shadow’, described as a uniquely wonderful work. The programme includes the world premiere of Segerstam’s Symphony no. 325, ‘Borderkeys for the keyboard...’ (‘Raja-avaimet...’), where the solo instrument is, unusually, a synthesiser.
After the interval, the young musicians perform Brahms’s Symphony no. 4, one of the most fascinating monuments of the German symphonic tradition.
