Baudelaire’s oeuvre has ceaselessly and open-endedly engaged with histories of images, cinema, radical militancy, and violence by or against the state. Spanning over a decade of artistic production across installation, print, photography and film.

Towards the end of the last decade, Baudelaire interviewed former members of the Japanese Red Army, engaging in a politico-formalist exploration that render paths to radicalism purely through a series of landscape shots filmed at the locations traversed by the subject.

The Anabasis… explored the itinerary of its protagonists between cinema and terrorism by opening fictional and subjective spaces within a documentary form. The Ugly One, a second chapter that mirrors the first, explores the biographical and documentary possibilities of a fiction film.

Also Known As Jihadi (2017) follows the progress of a young man’s journey from France to Syria, and back to France where he is incarcerated for allegedly joining Daesh. Based on real events, and drawn from thousands of pages of judicial documents, the cinematic work employs the so-called landscape theory (fukeiron in Japanese). The theory originated in the film AKA Serial Killer (1969) that is codirected by Masao Adachi, who was the subject of an earlier film by Baudelaire: The Anabasis of May and Fusako Shigenobu, Masao Adachi, and 27 Years without Images (2011).

This public event is part of the course "A Short Introduction to the History of Moving Image" organised at the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Arts Helsinki.
