Salonen & The Next Generation: The Sibelius Academy and Juilliard School Symphony Orchestra
The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki and New York’s world-famous Juilliard School are joining forces to form a joint symphony orchestra to celebrate the centenary of Finland’s independence. The orchestra will hold concerts at the Music Centre in Helsinki on 26 August, at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm on 28 August and at the Lincoln Center in New York City on 5 September 2017. The orchestra will be conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, an alumnus of the Sibelius Academy. The tour programme combines tradition with youthful enthusiasm and features Four Legends from the Kalevala by Jean Sibelius, Mania by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Radical Light by American composer Steven Stucky, the latter inspired by Sibelius’s symphonies. Jonathan Roozeman, a young Finnish cellist, will appear as the soloist in Salonen’s work. This concert forms part of the celebrations for the centenary of Finland’s independence (Suomi 100).
