The 100th anniversary celebrations of the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra continue in autumn 2016 with the world premiere of a commissioned work by Lotta Wennäkoski under Professor of Conducting and Orchestra Education Atso Almila. Beethoven’s dramatic overture to the play Egmont depicts the career and execution of a freedom-fighter prince in the Netherlands in the 16th century. Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, written 20 years after Egmont, immerses the listener in the psyche of a young French poet. This work also features an execution: in the movement ‘Marche au supplice’, the poet dreams that he is being taken to be executed for murdering his beloved.
