Young artists of the summer: Maija Lampela, viol
Some of the best music ever written for viol is featured in this programme: items such as Forqueray’s perhaps best-known work Jupiter, a movement from his impressive Suite in C minor, along with parts of Marais’ Suitte d’un goût étranger.
Forqueray and Marais were both employed at court at Versailles, and their virtuoso viol parts combined with a continuo group formed of several instruments – viol, lute and harpsichord – evoke the abundance and splendour of the French court.
Amidst these French giants of the instruments are solo viol works employing the ‘lyra viol’ technique popular in 17th-century England, featuring unusual tunings. Corkine’s sets of variations on popular tunes showcase the intimate, introvert aspects of the instrument.
