Mikko Malmivaara explores the border between sleep and wakefulness
Mikko Malmivaara is about to enter a mysterious place where subconscious and conscious meet: the border between sleep and wakefulness.
Dreams, memories, hopes and fears blend with mundane every day experiences. Rattling archive tapes, early childhood lullabies and vivid nordic traditions are filtered through a curtain of sleep, twisting and turning into distant echos. Or maybe it is our wakefulness that is twisted, and only dreams are real?
Following the logic of dreams, the concert drifts from soundscape to another. Musical motives reminiscent of Nordic folk music morph into walls of abstract sound. At the center of the concert is a trio formed by Malmivaara (guitar) Tommie Black-Roff (accordion) and Klara Källström (cello). Through sensitive, open improvisation the nimble ensemble propels itself over the borders – towards the borderlands!
