Pedapproach seminar
Panels, workshops and performances – learn more about the online seminar by master’s degree students in Dance and Theatre Pedagogy.
Pedapproach 2020 opens up the thinking and practices of soon-graduating dance and theatre pedagogy master students. In the event students are sharing their processes in-between art, pedagogy and research. Due to the corona virus pandemic the event is organised entirely online. There will be both material that you can dig into anytime — texts, videos — as well as live stream workshops, performances and panel discussions.
We will try our best to make our events as accessible and inclusive as possible. Majority of the programme will include translation and sign language interpretation.
See the full programme below. Please note that some of the events require pre-registration. Welcome!

Performances
Välitila – opettajan monologi, omaa tarinaansa tutkiva esitys / In Between – teacher’s monologue, performance exploring it’s own story (Esko Korpelainen)
Performative research result of Esko Korpelainen’s thesis. In the process Korpelainen wrote letters to his own inner teachers. In PedApproach this originally black box performance is reformed into a living room-live version. Performer: Esko Korpelainen. Language: Finnish.
Under the Bridge (Verna Laine)
The performance is based on the work that was done by Laine in the Leap Beyond production at the Theatre Academy in 2019-2020. The performers perform in harnesses (aerial harness on the hips) that attach at the back to an elastic bungee that allows movement to extend to new spatial and temporal dimensions. It allows the exploration of the ‘suddenly-possible’ (that which was not previously possible or even thought of) and the investigation of what ‘taking a Leap of Faith’ could be as a bodily experience.
MANIFESTIVAL (Minttu-Maaria Makkonen)
Minttu loves parties
So she has a party
And she welcomes you
Party starts at 6pm and takes about 15 minutes
Guests can come and go
The dress is voluntary
Guest don’t need to bring anything but Minttu loves carnations and sparkling wine
Finnish is spoken at the party, but quite a bit
See you in Facebook on festival day
Manifestival is a perfomance draft by Minttu-Maaria Makkonen who is researching relation and space between spectators and performer in a performance. She asks how performance happens between spectator and performer? How does the spectator affects the performer? This is the first experiment without live performance situation.
fe(a)tus (Nori Varga)
“To me the body is a cultural and a political archive.
It is an archive that contains images, narratives and practices in it.”
– Paul B. Preciado

The performance is based on the fictive (delayed) thesis work of Nóra Varga on body images and on her sound art project exploring the socio-cultural presence of our public and private bodies. The performance’s duration is 15 minutes per person, registration is required. The participation is possible without a camera or with muted microphone as well. The performance is in English, before the registration you will get a zoom link and further information. Attention: the time slots for the registration are based on Finnish time (UTC +3), please be aware of the possible time difference. Recommended ages 13+

Workshops
Physical Theatre remoteworkhop – “Expressive intensities”. Includes a discussion about physical acting in the performace Leap Beyond (Laura Humppila).
A remotely-led, 30-minute mini physical theatre workshop on working with intensities and tensions of the body, applied from mime-technique and Jacques Lecoq´s 7 levels of tension. After the workhop a presentation and a discussion on the role of physical acting in the creative process and the performance Leap Beyond (Artistic-Peagogical Thesis). Leap Beyond performance explored taking a leap, exceeding one self, flying and the emotions and thoughts around coaching/self help phenomena.
Platform: Zoom, meeting ID: 848 3606 6976
Preparing for workshop:
- place the phone/laptop/pad so that you can move in front of it (at home or out, etc.). You can participate with your name or a creative nametag.
- check that your camera and microphone are working and can be on during the session. Please come in time. We will start with everybody having their cameras on. We won´t be working everything in front of the camera, but to allow visual interaction, and to explore the nature of training performing arts in virtual surroundings, it is good for the camera to work. The language of the workshop is English or Finnish depending on the participants.
- Zoom information and instructions: You can download zoom for free at: https://zoom.us/ on your computer, phone, or tablet. If you want to use it with a browser, use Firefox or Chrome. You can use the links provided, or the meeting IDs. You can set zoom to “gallery view” to see everyone, or “speaker view” to see just the person who is talking. You can also edit your name, and your personal information is not visible to others in the call.

All You Can Do is Breathe and Hope-workshop (Maia Nowack and Mercedes Balarezo).
In this workshop we will explore one of the scores that we used for the performance “All you can do is breath and hope” and have a discussion around some of the themes from our thesis works “Weaving Presences, Unravelling Normal: Affirming Diverse Ways of Being in Dance Pedagogy” and “The Voice as a Limb: Sounding Dance Laboratory”. We will work with attention, presence, breathing and sounding movements. We are interested in adapting this score to the location where you can practice this from. You will need some sort of blanket and if you have other things with a texture you like you can have them around. You can do it in any sort of space, it doesn’t matter the size or if it’s empty. The workshop is open to any level of experience or background.
Platform: Zoom, meeting ID: 894 1526 2465. We will come together with cameras on at the beginning, but you can then choose to work with cameras on or off. During the exploration we will have microphones off. There is no registration needed, but we will admit you through the Zoom waiting room. Please try to join 5 or so minutes before the start time to allow for this. We will take breaks, and you are free to leave at any point.
