Feel Helsinki: Signe Trio

Saturday, June 8, 2019 - 12:00 to 12:30
Music Centre, Päälämpiö
Free entry
Signe Trio invites the audience to an intimate moment where time, space and stories blend into a dream-like soundscape.

Three singers interpret their compositions to poems by ancient poet Sappho.

The aesthetic development of modernism can be heard in the poems’ translations, ranging from florid and structurally loyal versions by Bliss Carman and John Myers O’Hara to the elegance of Mary Barnard and intensity of Pentti Saarikoski. Sappho’s fragments recount timeless depictions of passionate love, longing and equality on an emotional level in Finnish and English.

Their music flows through different genres, including jazz, contemporary and folk, and the singers’ natural and expressive voices wrap the audience to a delicate but persistent embrace. Signe Trio’s vocalists base their expression style on jazz but lean over also to poetry and audio drama. The trio was established in 2015 and consists of vocalists Riikka Keränen, Selma Savolainen and Josefiina Vannesluoma.

Feel Helsinki is a new urban festival for the whole family, taking place at the Helsinki Music Centre on 8 June. Uniarts Helsinki organises well over a thousand events for the public on a yearly basis, but Feel Helsinki is the first opportunity to enjoy the talents of the university’s students and alumni in one place through a day-long event. The festival has program that is especially tailored for children.

Feel Helsinki invites people to come together and engage all of their senses by enjoying food, wine, art and meaningful discussions. The main partner in the event is the Viini magazine, which will turn the Helsinki Music Centre into a hub of interesting pop-up restaurants, offering delicious menus.
