Book publication event 16.5: Imaging the Spiritual Quest
Welcome to the celebration of publication of the volume Imaging the Spiritual Quest, to be held on Wednesday 16.5.2018 at 14:00 in the Library at the Academy of Fine Arts (Elimäenkatu 25 A, Helsinki). Imaging the Spiritual Quest, which appears in the series Writings from the Academy of Fine Arts, brings together essays from artists and scholars of religion and spirituality on a range of topics having to do with the relationships among art, religion, and the phenomenon of spirituality.
As an element in human societies, religion forms part of the backdrop against which artists have worked in the past and present. Today, artists work in a world in which the place, role, and authority of religious traditions and institutions have changed, a process that began with the dawn of the modern era. Although the authority and influence of organized religion has declined in Western Europe and North America, interest in spirituality (itself a broad category of practices and beliefs) continues to be on the increase. At the same time, some artists today engage the phenomenon of spirituality in their own work, and scholars continue to explore the relationships between art, religion, and spirituality. This collection of essays by scholars and artists explores the intersections of art, religion, and spirituality in Finland and abroad, both in the past and today.
The genesis of the book lies in lectures given in the spring 2015 course Religion and Art offered by Frank Brümmel, Lecturer in Sculpture at the University of the Arts Helsinki. The course included lectures by guest artists and scholars, and visits to sites.
The list of contributors to the volume represents a range of artists and scholars working today in the field of art, religion, and spirituality: Johan Bastubacka, Päivikki Kallio, Liisa Lindgren, Elina Merenmies, J.O. Mollander, Jyrki Siukonen, Riikka Stewen, Juha-Heikki Tihinen, and Grant White.
