Matia Häkkinen – The emergence of a stable third – a concert on columns and the space between them
Matias Häkkinen’s second doctoral concert creates a unique musical experience: the separation of labile (unstable) and stable (stable) tertiary harmony that emerged in the late Middle Ages and an ensuing duel.
Musical sentence structures and pitches are linked to a mutual dependency. Resting and tense musical situations, i.e. columns supporting the structure and the spaces between them, are separated. Each vertical interval is either natural, i.e. resting, or non-natural, tense. A freely tuned recorder sometimes agrees with the fixed harpsichord and lute, and sometimes intones based on its own whims just because it can. A magical magnetism emerges between these instruments and their melody. Music flows naturally between the magnetic poles. The programme includes late medieval and Renaissance music played by a small band.
The concert is organised in cooperation with the Paavali parish and Ensemble Nylandia.
Performers
- Matias Häkkinen, harpsichord and organ
- Sini Vahervuo, recorders
