Jarkko Hartikainen – Living sound

Jaakko Hartikainen’s postgraduate concert, LIVING SOUND, invites listeners to tune into the material awareness of the real world through the compositions performed and empathically listened to at the concern.

Covid pass is required in all concerts

Based on the order issued by the Regional State Administrative Agency of Southern Finland on 2 December 2021, covid pass is required for all events at the Sibelius Academy. Covid passes are checked from the entire audience at all our public events that hold more than 20 people. The restriction applies to our Helsinki locations. If you do not have a covid pass, you are entitled to a refund of your ticket. Ticketmaster is in contact with customers.

You can watch a free live stream of the concert on Youtube, 21 December, 19–20:40.

The performing musicians have participated in the creative process of the works in close cooperation with the composer.

Jarkko Hartikainen’s compositions start from the material character of sound. The untamed beauty of carefully selected and designed live sound events is revealed in their coexistence with classical instruments and musicians. This postgraduate project stemming from cooperation between the composer and performers invites the listener to tune in to material awareness of the real world through acoustic musicality.

In his compositions, Hartikainen explores, listens to and communicates the sensitivity of the material character of producing sound. In concerts, Hartikainen is inspired by the communal breathing that is live music. In art, Hartikainen finds it important to focus on concrete marginal conditions rather than controlling or conquering nature. It is also important to come together as a community to wonder about different, to a great extent individual and unanticipated acoustic situations – the materiality that lives in sound. In this era of the climate crisis, Covid-19 pandemic and artificial intelligence, we are waking up to the unsustainability of our different artificial systems and their incompatibility with our environment. To survive, we must reharmonise our culture with nature.
