The symphonic wind band of the Sibelius Academy, Academy Winds, performs with guest conductor Bjarte Engeset from Norway.

The concert begins and ends with works for large wind band by Percy Grainger, both of them highly diverse and imaginative in their scoring. Tristia by Kalevi Aho is a fantasy that explores the rarely heard soft and nuanced sound of a wind ensemble. Palatsi-rapsodia (Palace Rhapsody) by Aulis Sallinen takes in a wide range of moods, from sluggish melancholy to jazzy swing.

At the turn of the 19th century, many composers had ‘pet clarinettists’ for whom they wrote dazzling virtuoso works. The soloist for Introduction, Theme and Variations by Gioachino Rossini in this concert is to be selected by democratic audition from among all clarinettists at the Sibelius Academy.
