Rachel McIntosh: It takes a village to raise an opera singer

American Opera Master’s student Rachel McIntosh has been impressed by the facilities, the friendly welcomes and and sense of community she has encountered at the Sibelius Academy.

”The opera class is quite small and we spent basically all day every day together. From the very first meeting everybody has been very willing to offer themselves for help. I remember even being shocked about all the friendliness in our first class meeting. And anyway, it takes a whole village to raise an opera singer – there are so many people involved, McIntosh says. I was looking at different opportunities in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. I would say just go for it to anybody who would be interested in studying abroad in general; although it can be intimitading it is really worth your while trying. There’s usually always more help available than you think. One thing that struck me about Helsinki was, that you’re never more than about 15 minutes away from the woods."
