Danuta Mirka (University of Southampton) will visit Sibelius Academy on November, 13–17. She is a renowned authority on eighteenth-century music theory. She has published widely on rhythm and metre in eighteenth-century music as well as on topic theory. She is the author of the prize-winning Metric Manipulations in Haydn and Mozart (Oxford University Press, 2009) and the editor of The Oxford Handbook of Topic Theory (Oxford University Press, 2014). She describes the Sibelius Academy workshops as follows:

“The historical listener of eighteenth-century music was a listener familiar with eighteenth-century conventions. The series of workshops will cover conventions related to musical meter (workshop 1), genres and styles (workshop 2) and phrase structure (workshops 3-4). During the final workshop the knowledge of these conventions will be applied in analysis of Haydn’s Keyboard Sonata in E-flat major, Hob. XVI:52, first movement, with the aim of reconstructing the experience of this piece by historical listeners.”
