Thomas Berghuis Xingwei yishu – Performance Art & Attitude in China
Dr. Thomas J. Berghuis will introduce the early development of performance art in China, from the 1980s to the 1990s.
Berghuis was the first Robert H. N. Ho Curator of Chinese Art at the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, New York (2013-2015).
Berghuis served as Lecturer in Asian Art History at the University of Sydney, Australia (2008-2013). He authored Performance Art in China (Hong Kong: Timezone 8, 2006). He is currently based in the Netherlands.
Berghuis will introduce the early development of performance art in China, from the 1980s to the 1990s. During this period performance art became known as xingdong yishu, ’action art’. Soon artists also used the term xingwei yishu –“multifaceted” to describe not only ‘behavioral art’ but also a particular ‘attitude’ or ’state of mind’. Artists began to uphold an ‘antagonistic manner’ or an ‘uncooperative approach’ (bu hezuo fangshi). Xingwei yishu, when connected with xingdong yishu, opens important ways of looking at performance art and experimental art in China and across East Asia.
The open lecture is organized by the MA programme in Live Art & Performance Studies (LAPS), Theatre Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki.
