Essi Kuokkanen: Lump in a Throat and Dusty Eyes
Welcome to the opening on Thursday 15 November at 5–7 pm
The works in the Lump in a Throat and Dusty Eyes exhibition approach questions of alienation, loneliness and the search of finding a connection through different painterly means, making different kinds of intimate psychophysical states and sensations visible. The lonely protagonists in the paintings seem to obsessively look for means to communicate with someone or alternatively to close themselves in their solitude. It is about desires, cravings and the search of pleasure, and the disappointment when the reality doesn’t meet your expectations.
It might be as distressing that one doesn’t have anything to say as it is to have a lot but no means to say it. If you repeat any word many times enough it will stiffen your tongue and starts to feel alien, gibberish.
Essi Kuokkanen (b. 1991) lives and works in Helsinki. She is finishing her studies in the painting department at the Academy of Fine Arts. Lump in a Throat and Dusty Eyes is the second part of her Master's degree thesis. The first part was shown in Kuvan Kevät, master's exhibition in spring 2018.
