4.12. James Prevett: Swelling parts, and other stories
Sculpture Lecturer James Prevett will talk about some things that inform his own artwork.
James Prevett makes objects, text, images, video and events often combining them to explore the sculptural and in turn the physical. His work deals with the vitality of things – images, ideas, memories as well as objects – and the way these seep into and affect a physical reality. Sometimes uncomfortable and sometimes humorous, James makes nuanced work that resists simple thematic readings but rather produces atmospheres or feelings.
He has exhibited widely in countries such as UK, Thailand, Singapore, Estonia, USA, Austria and Brazil. James was part of a team of artists, musicians and architects that represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2006. Recent projects and exhibitions include: Happy Eater! (Group exhibition at TACO!, London, 2018), Patsastellaan: Parties For Public Sculpture (public events around Helsinki, 2017 and 2018), Distension (Solo exhibition, SIC, Helsinki 2017), Say What? (ASC Gallery, London 2016), Some Things are Bigger than Others (Raja Gallery, Tallinn 2016), FOAM (Various venues in UK, 2015).
Current projects include: Patsastellaan: Parties for Public Sculpture with another 4 parties planned for public sculptures in Helsinki in 2018-19 and ‘Things for houses’ with TACO! In Thamesmead, London developing a new body of work revolving around the idea of making sculptures for residents of housing estates in Thamesmead.
