PUBLIC Meeting of the CrossSections project: Basak Senova (TR)
Exhibition Laboratory hosts the PUBLIC Meeting of the CrossSections project in Helsinki. As the speaker of the meeting, Basak Senova (TR) will introduce and talk about the research strains and the leading curatorial motive of the project. The meeting in Helsinki specifically aims to discuss the curatorial methodology and the structure of the project. In the second part of the meeting some of the participating artists including Behzad Khosravi Noori (IR/SE), Benji Boyadgian (FI/PS), Egle Oddo (IT/FI), Inma Herrera (ES/FI), Isa Rosenberger (AT), Lina Selander (SE), Nikolaus Gansterer (AT), Tamsin Snow (IE/UK), Otto Karvonen (FI) and Timo Tuhkanen (FI) along with some of the partners of the project will give their input.
CrossSections is a cross disciplinary research platform contemplating on artistic research, dialogues, and production. The project reflects on "process" in the form of an open format with the aim to articulate critical reactions to the political, economic, and social disturbances facing us today. The project emerged from the need to challenge the ‘status quo’ across the political spectrum and support effective and critical forms of discursive and artistic productions to emerge. In the course of two years (2017-2019), the project is expected to engage with a number of artists, scholars and cultural workers, producing a varied forms of meetings, residencies, workshops, exhibitions, performances, and talks designed to be held in four cities: Vienna, Helsinki, Tallinn and Stockholm.
Curated by Basak Senova, CrossSections project is organized in partnership of Kunsthalle Exnergasse - WUK (Werkstätten und Kulturhaus) in Vienna; iaspis - the Swedish Arts Grants Committee's International Programme for Visual and Applied Artists and Konstfack - University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, and NFK - The Nordic Art Association in Stockholm; Nya Småland in different locations in Sweden; HIAP - Helsinki International Artist Programme and Academy of Fine Arts - University of the Arts Helsinki in Helsinki; Center for Contemporary Arts, Estonia - Kaasaegse Kunsti Eesti Keskus in Estonia; and Press to Exit Project Space in Skopje.
Basak Senova (TR) is a curator and designer. Studied Literature and Graphic Design (MFA in Graphic Design and Ph.D. in Art, Design and Architecture at Bilkent University). Attended the 7th Curatorial Training Programme of Stichting De Appel, Amsterdam. Lectured in various universities in Turkey as an assistant professor (1998-2017). Was appointed as the Resident Fellow at the University of the Arts, Helsinki in co-operation with HIAP (2017). Received Associate Professorship degree on Fine Arts by the Higher Education Council of Turkey (2017). Has been writing on art, technology and media, initiating and developing projects and curating exhibitions since 1995. One of the founding members of NOMAD; the organizer of "ctrl_alt_del" sound art project; and "Upgrade!Istanbul". Editor of various publications, editorial correspondents of ibraaz.org and Turkish correspondent of Flash Art International. Acted as an advisory board member of the Turkish Pavilion in Venice Biennial and the Istanbul Biennial (2014-2017), and a member of the International Biennial Association’s (IBA) editorial board. Curator of the Pavilion of Turkey at the 53rd Venice Biennale. Co-curated the UNCOVERED (Cyprus) and the 2nd Biennial of Contemporary Art, D-0 ARK Underground (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Acted as the Art Gallery Chair of (ACM) SIGGRAPH 2014 (Vancouver); the curator of the Helsinki Photography Biennial 2014; and the Jerusalem Show VII: Fractures (2014). In 2015, curated the Pavilion of Republic of Macedonia at the 56th Venice Biennale and Lines of Passage (in medias res) Exhibition in Lesvos (2016) among other exhibitions. Currently, Senova is based in Vienna working on CrossSections project in Vienna, Helsinki, and Stockholm.
