Joint Studies

The University of the Arts Helsinki provides joint courses for all University of the Arts Helsinki degree students. Joint instruction can include individual courses or larger study modules arranged by the academy network. You can find information on joint studies this academic year below.

All three academies also list their courses that can be opened to degree students at the other two academies. A course from another academy or joint courses between two or three academies must be included in the student's individual study plan and approved by the student's department. The student is advised to discuss the applicability of a course to his or her degree with a programme coordinator at the respective academy. A prerequisite for attending an inter-academy course is that the course can be included in a minimum standard degree offered by the host academy.

SAMA – Sound Arts & Sonic Arts

SAMA – Sound Arts & Sonic Arts

The goal of SAMA (Sound Art & Sonic Arts at University of the Arts Helsinki) is to examine sound as a wide-ranging form of contemporary art. The artistic practices and contexts of sound art stem from the fields of music, sound design, visual arts and performing arts. With its diverse areas of expertise, The University of the Arts offers an excellent environment as well as the necessary facilities for an interdisciplinary approach to Sound Art and Sonic Arts.

The education combines the knowledge of UniArts’ three academies: Sibelius Academy, the Academy of Fine Arts and Theatre Academy Helsinki. SAMA is a University of the Arts study module aimed at developing mobility and collaboration between the academies.

Organizers

University of the Arts Helsinki is Finland's national university for the arts—the country's highest institution for fine art, theatre and music. SAMA is coordinated by the University of the Arts’ Open Campus, and planned jointly by Time and Space Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, the Masters' Program of Sound at Theatre Academy Helsinki and the Department of Music & Technology at the Sibelius Academy.
