The University of the Arts Helsinki Admitted 328 New Students

The admission results of the University of the Arts Helsinki are now available. The university admitted 328 new Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students, out of which 53 were admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts, 180 to the Sibelius Academy, and 95 to the Theatre Academy. The University of the Arts Helsinki is one of the most sought-after schools in Finland, as approximately merely 8 % of the applicants were admitted to the school. Out of all the selected students, 95 % had listed the University of the Arts Helsinki as their first choice in their Joint application to higher education.

The university received a total of 4,585 applications to Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree programmes (the number of applicants was 4,078). Out of the applications, 1,205 were to the Academy of Fine Arts, 1,332 to the Sibelius Academy, and 2,048 to the Theatre Academy. Out of the applicants who got accepted into a programme leading to a Bachelor’s and/or a Master’s degree, 79 % were first-time applicants or applicants who are regarded as first-time applicants.

The most popular programmes were Degree Programme in Acting in Finnish (1,088 applications / 12 selected), the 5.5.-year programme of the Academy of Fine Arts (867/23), Classical Music Performance with an instrument as the main subject (432/79), Master’s admission to the Academy of Fine Arts (293/25), and Music Education (263/30).

In 2016, two new degree programmes were introduced. The Sibelius Academy expanded its English-language Global Music programme to also include studies leading to a Bachelor’s degree (41 applicants of whom 8 were admitted). The Theatre Academy launched a Master’s degree programme pilot, MA in Ecology and Contemporary Performance, which had 59 applicants of whom 8 were admitted.

The Sibelius Academy’s Junior Academy selected 29 new students out of 111 applicants.

The number of applicants and selected students varies every year, as all programmes do not admit new students each year.
