Sibelius Academy to receive a donation of one million dollars to accelerate a matching fund campaign in Finland
The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki and Friends of the Sibelius Academy have reached a preliminary contract on a donation with California-based Marvin Suomi. Marvin Suomi and affiliated family foundations have committed to donating a matching amount of money for each euro raised by the Sibelius Academy and each dollar raised by Friends of the Sibelius Academy, up to one million dollars.
The donation is a gift in honor of the centennial of the independence of Finland. A Suomi Centennial Fund will be founded in order to administer the raised funds, and these funds will be used to support the educational operations of the Sibelius Academy and to advance the cooperation with its partner institutions in the United States.
"The rise of the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki into the top of musical institutions worldwide has been a unique success story in the history of a hundred years old Finland. With the matching fund campaign, I want to encourage companies, foundations and individuals to support the maintaining of the high quality of Finnish music education and its development in an increasingly international environment", says Marvin Suomi. Suomi is a renowned real estate developer and philanthropist, and he is of Finnish ancestry. In 2009, Marvin Suomi was decorated by the Republic of Finland as Knight, First Class, in the Order of the Lion of Finland for his long-time work in supporting Finnish culture in the United States.
“This donation is significant and with its support we can establish international professorships and organize masterclasses, for example. Through these wonderful opportunities our students get to work with the world’s leading artists”, says Kaarlo Hilden, the dean of the Sibelius Academy of the University of Arts Helsinki, who also serves as a chairman of the board of directors for Friends of the Sibelius Academy. Friends of the Sibelius Academy is an American organization that has a goal of supporting collaboration between the Sibelius Academy and its American partner institutions.
