Paavali Jumppanen and Giovanni Verrando to be visiting professors
Composition and Music Theory teacher, composer Giovanni Verrando and pianist Paavali Jumppanen have been named visiting professors to the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki, commencing on 1 August 2015. The visiting professorships will be realised through University of the Arts additional funding. The professors will initially be named for a single academic year.
During his term as professor, composer Giovanni Verrando will teach intensive courses for Sibelius Academy students of Composition and Music Theory. In addition, he will teach orchestration and new techniques of expression, whilst also being part of teaching development. Verrando teaches Composition and Music Theory at the Milano Civica Scuola di Musica, and Orchestration and Composition Theory at the Lugano Conservatory in Switzerland. He has done ground-breaking research in instrumental research and orchestration.
During his time as Professor, pianist Paavali Jumppanen will work with students from the Master’s degree programme in Piano Muisc and DocMus Doctoral School students. Jumppanen will teach Master’s degree students during four teaching periods during the 2015/2016 academic year. Doctoral student teaching will be directed at chamber music: the objective is to provide a deeper analysis of personal performance, and to guide students in the search for new, interesting perspectives in relation to their research and analysis, and to apply it to their works. In actively forging an international career, Jumppanen embodies numerous qualities that are highly revered particularly from the perspective of doctoral education.

Verrando and Jumppanen were named visiting professors by Rector of the University of the Arts Helsinki Tiina Rosenberg, by proposal of the Dean of the Sibelius Academy.
