Nordic Master in Folk Music: sharing the Scandinavian folk music traditions

Nordic Master in Folk Music is a Master programme that unites four music universities: Royal College of Music (Stockholm, Sweden), Danish National Academy of Music (Esbjerg, Denmark), Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki (Finland) and Ole Bull Academy (Voss, Norway).

The intake in the programme is every other year and the next application will be in January 2017.

- Since we study in all of the participating institutions but only for one semester in each, all the participating schools want to give the students their best. So, the NoFo students really receive the best tuition each of these institutions has to offer, states Pauliina Syrjälä, who is the coordinating teacher for the NoFo studies at the Sibelius Academy.

Joonas Ojajärvi is a second year student in the NoFo programme. He has enjoyed networking with folk musicians and students across Scandinavia.

- Before starting these studies I have been teaching folk music for a while. I was constantly asked about folk music traditions in other Scandinavian countries. That was one of my motivations to apply - and I really feel that I have recieved a lot of confidence during these studies. And now I do have some answers to these questions, Ojajärvi says.
