Lauri Väkevä to continue as vice rector responsible for research

Professor of Music Education Lauri Väkevä will continue as vice rector responsible for research and doctoral education during the term 1 January 2018 – 31 July 2021 at the University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki). Väkevä has served in the part-time position for a year now.

Lauri Väkevä (Ph.D.) was initially selected to the position in autumn 2016. The selection was made based on Väkevä’s strong vision for elevating the profile and visibility of Uniarts Helsinki’s research in the university sector and even on an international scale.

His main research interests cover Afro-American music, popular music pedagogy, history of popular music, pragmatist aesthetics, philosophy of music education, informal learning, and digital music culture. Aside of his academic career, he has also worked as a musician, music journalist and teacher.

Väkevä has also worked as the team leader for the research group Basic Arts Education for All that is part of the ArtsEqual research project coordinated by Uniarts Helsinki.

The university board made the decision to invite Väkevä for a second term as the vice rector in a meeting on 2 November 2017 after hearing statements from a large group of directors of Uniarts Helsinki’s research and doctoral education. As of the beginning of 2018, the position of the vice rector responsible for research will be full-time.
