Professor, TeKaK/Master's Degree Programme in Choreography
Kirsi Monni has been invited to the post of Professor in Choreography for another five-year term, at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. Hence, she will continue in the post until the end of the year 2018.
Monni has had a long career as a choreographer, dancer, teacher and curator. Her list of works includes over 30 contemporary dance pieces with a common denominator of comprehensiveness of bodily articulation and usage of different forms of expression and philosophical orientation. She has been founding, building, and co-directing Zodiak – Centre for New Dance for two decades and been a member of the artistic directors group of the Theatre Academy’s Helsinki Act festival, as well as a Zodiak’s Side Step Festival.
Monni has received numerous awards, e.g. Suomi palkinto – Finland state prize/award from the National Council for Circus and Dance and the five year state artist grant in 1996, 2002, and 2008.
In 2004, Monni was granted the Doctoral Degree in Dance at the Theatre Academy. The written part of her dissertation was the first broad theory concerning the ontology of dance to be published in Finnish. In her artistic dissertation, she researched changes in dance paradigms in the 20th century and created new dance ontology with the help of Martin Heidegger’s philosophy of existence and art ontology. Monni has been Theatre Academy’s Professor in Choreography since the beginning of 2009 and is the Head of the Master’s Degree Programme in Choreography. She has also been a member of the Theatre Academy’s board (2010-2012), Research Council and Tutke’s management group (2009-2013), Department of Dance’s management group (2009-2013), publication committee (2009-) Chair 2014.
