norDIG. 2017: Sten Sandell & Aki Rissanen Duo / Atomic
19.00: Sten Sandell & Aki Rissanen Duo
Two Nordic pianists meet in an a recital of open minds, as veteran Swedish music improviser Sten Sandell joins Aki Rissanen, twenty years his junior. This recital features electroacoustic compositions by both, with improvisation in an important role. Sandell and Rissanen have previously performed together in 2007.
Founded in 2000 by Norwegian and Swedish musicians, Atomic draws on the American jazz tradition and on European free jazz and improvisation. Thoughtful melodies proposed by Håvard Wiik and Fredrik Ljungkvist alternate with unexpected shifts. The ensemble describes itself as “half academic lecture, half party night”. Atomic have toured Europe, Japan and the USA, and at norDIG. they perform music from their most recent album, Six Easy Pieces (2017).
