Seamus Blake and Sibis Alumni Big Band
One of the most prominent performers of his generation, sax player Seamus Blake (b. 1970) appears as guest artist with the Sibis Alumni Big Band at the Savoy Theatre on 16 September. He brings compositions and arrangements of his own and appears as both conductor and sax soloist. The guest vocalist is Diana Payton.
“Extraordinary, a total saxophonist” says legendary guitar player John Scofield of his fellow band member. The exceptional musicianship of Seamus Blake includes his soaring melodic solos, his grand sonority that will fill any space, and his diverse, lyrical compositions. Blake has released a dozen albums in his own name; of these, we may mention the exquisitely balanced Superconductor (2015). Blake regularly performs with the Mingus Big Band and the bands of Antonio Sanchez and Bill Stewart.
The Sibis Alumni Big Band is a combo that has been in existence since 2010, being convened on a project basis. Its members are alumni, students and teachers of the Department of Jazz at the Sibelius Academy. Its guest conductors and soloists have included such names as Bob Mintzer, Tim Hagans, John Scofield, Jim McNeely, Darcy James Argue, Vince Mendoza and Joe Lovano. This concert is organised by the Savoy Theatre.
