S/N – signal-to-noise ratio March 24 – April 9, 2017
Exhibition Laboratory, Merimiehenkatu 36 (upstairs)
Open Tue–Sun, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The exhibition will open on March 23, 2017, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Welcome!
Like alchemists, the artists participating in the S/N exhibition examine the essence of the digital image and try to find the primary matter of image production. The idea is to refine matter in some way, to assemble an image based on data – which may have consisted of archival photographs, sound or statistics, for instance.
The exhibition is about exploring the world of the digital image. While the editing of images normally focuses on the surface of the image, the point is now to find tools for processing that which lies beneath the surface. What is the logic underlying the digital image, and how can we include thoughts in it?
The exhibition includes works by eight BFA and MFA students from the Time and Space Arts subject area of the Academy of Fine Arts of Uniarts Helsinki: Heli Kaskinen, Lin I-Shuo, Tero Niskanen, Iiri Poteri, Erno-Erik Raitanen, Niko E. Saari, Aleksi Salminen and Toni Vallasjoki. The starting point of the exhibition was a course given by the visual artist Tuomo Rainio at the Academy of Fine Arts called “Alchemy of the Digital Image”.
