The concert features string quartets by father and son, György and Lukas Ligeti, as well as an impressionistic piece by a young Finnish composer, Outi Tarkiainen, that was originally written for Kamus Quartet. The second quartet by György Ligeti truly presents all of his unique features of composition - his “micropolyphonic” technique is the abiding idea of the piece, applied repeatedly across its many changeable atmospheres. Ligeti has said that the Second Quartet is his favorite work from this period in his life. Lukas Ligeti’s Moving Houses belongs to a different tradition of works for the string quartet, brought to life by the unique energy and entrepreneurship of the Kronos Quartet, who originally commissioned it (similarly as Bryce Dessner’s Tenebre, heard in another Musica Nova programme). David Harrington, the first violinist of the Kronos Quartet, said that when he first encountered Lukas Ligeti’s music, he felt “a powerful sense of this young composer collecting experiences from all over the place, almost being surprised by what would become part of his collection.” The concert forms part of the Musica Nova festival.
