Perspectives on Collaboration and Interdisciplinarity in and through the Arts
An international conference hosted by the University of the Arts Helsinki and CERADA (Center for Educational Research and Academic Development in the Arts), Helsinki October 19–22, 2016
We are experiencing a renaissance in the power of the arts, even where political will is lacking. Artists increasingly make their own futures and work collaboratively across disciplines. Dimensions of creativity and innovation, empowered learning, distributed and ethical leadership, and entrepreneurship and activism, all of which are embedded within artistic practices, are being recognized as critical to contemporary societies in diverse ways. At the same time arts institutions in Higher Education, many of which have operated as small organizations focused on a single discipline, are starting to merge and to collaborate at interdisciplinary levels. This trend raises many questions about purpose and principles, and indeed in some contexts arts organisations are resisting pressures to merge, seeing these being driven by finance and bureaucracy, and perceiving a threat to their own core purpose and quality.
This international conference will explore the potential and challenges of interdisciplinarity, and the full scope of the performing and visual arts in discovering new territories and evolving beyond existing paradigms. Through the event we aim to set agendas and mobilize global networks, generating dialogue and exchange between researchers, arts practitioners, and professionals from a wide range of disciplines including education, psychology, health care, organizational management and leadership.

The world we're living in is fractured, and we're facing unimaginable challenges. It is a context which desperately needs the arts - they bring us elements of creativity and humanity that are essential to meeting these challenges for the long term. In the arts we need to find ways to become increasingly embedded in society. This has to happen in diverse ways so that the arts can realise their full potential, rather than becoming more marginalized. The professional world of the arts is changing rapidly, and in Higher Education we are having to rethink the education and training we offer, enlarging concepts of what it is to be a professional, and opening up new doors to enable the next generations of artists to be relevant and successful. Working collaboratively and across disciplines is essential to this. The conference celebrates the coming together of the different arts disciplines within University of the Arts Helsinki, and equally its growing engagement internationally. This event is one manifestation of Uniarts Helsinki’s commitment to exchange globally, and to strive for a leading role in the future of higher education in the arts.

Helen Marriage: The Power of Cultural Disruption
Artichoke has produced some of the UK’s most extraordinary large-scale art events ranging from Royal de Luxe’s The Sultan’s Elephant, which closed central London for over 1,000,000 spectators, through Antony Gormley’s Fourth Plinth project One & Other, to Peace Camp by Deborah Warner and Fiona Shaw for the London 2012 Olympic Festival. Artichoke’s biennial festival, Lumiere, has become an international sensation, drawing visitors from across the globe to the wintry darkness of Northern England. In 2015 the company commissioned David Best, principal artist at the Burning Man festival, to create Temple with the communities in Derry~Londonderry. Helen’s previous work as Director of the Salisbury Festival - transformed from a local affair to what The Times described as a ‘miracle of modern British culture’. She was awarded a Loeb Fellowship at Harvard in 2012, a prestigious fellowship given to individuals working in urban design and planning. Her appointment was an acknowledgement of the impact Artichoke has made on the way mass public art events are negotiated and staged.
Jörg Reckhenrich: Art into Society - How Organisations Can Benefit from Artistic Interventions
The demand for creative thinking within organisations is not questionable. Today’s uncertain organisational situations need a more playful mindset, which helps to lead through those changing moments. In this lecture a variety of examples of art interventions in organisations will show how a different frame of experience and space of reflection can be established.
Jörg Reckhenrich lives in two worlds. He completed his master's degree at the Art Academy Münster and has worked for international organisations for more than 15 years. He is adjunct Professor for Innovation Management at Antwerp Management School and member of the faculty at the Lorange Institute Switzerland. He is also visiting lecturer at IMD Lausanne, London Business School and Sotheby’s London. Jörg was listed as one of the world’s “top 25 management thinkers” by the journal Business Strategy Review and was mentioned as "Management Guru" by the FT London.
With his background as an artist and business lecturer, Jörg developed the concept of Creative Leadership, which introduces the creative principles of fine arts into the corporate field. For example, through his research in art and the corporate world, he has developed a tool for evaluating creativity of top-level management in large corporations that has been adopted by a leading executive search firm. In his presentations Jörg bridges stories from the art world with questions about creativity, innovation and leadership in contemporary organisations. Jörg has published widely on his approach in magazines such as Journal of Business Strategy, Business Strategy Review, and Harvard Business Manager. His ideas are discussed in news journals like The Economist, FT London and FT India and his book “The Fine Art od Success” was published by Wiley, in spring 2011. Adam Rudolph: Go: Organic Orchestra collaboration
Go: Organic Orchestra brings together students and staff across the academies at the University of the Arts Helsinki to collaborate, break through borders and create a performance improvisationally conducted by the internationally renowned composer-percussionist behind the concept.
For the past three decades composer, improviser and percussionist Adam Rudolph has performed extensively in concert throughout North & South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Rudolph has been hailed as “a pioneer in world music” by the NY Times and "a master percussionist” by Musician magazine. He has released 25 recordings under his own name, featuring his compositions and percussion work. Rudolph composes for his ensembles Moving Pictures and Organic Orchestra, an 18 to 54 piece group for which he has developed an original music notation and conducting system. He has taught and conducted hundreds of musicians in the Organic Orchestra concept; most recently in Sicily, Naples, Oslo, and Istanbul, NYC and LA. Rudolph recently premiered his opera The Dreamer, based on the text of Friedreich Nietzsche's "The Birth of Tragedy".
In 1978 Rudolph and Gambian Kora player Jali Foday Musa Suso co-founded The Mandingo Griot Society, one of the first groups to combine African and American music. In 1988, he recorded the first fusion of American and Gnawa music with Sintir player and singer Hassan Hakmoun. Rudolph intensely studied North Indian Tabla for over 15 years with Pandit Taranath Rao. He learned hundreds of drum compositions and about how music is a form of Yoga – the unity of mind, body and spirit. In 1988 Rudolph began his association with Yusef Lateef, with whom he has recorded over 15 albums including several of their large ensemble collaborations. Lateef introduced Rudolph to the inspirational practice of Autophysiopsychic Music – “that which comes from one’s spiritual, physical and emotional self”. Rudolph still performs worldwide with Dr. Lateef. Their performances have ranged from their acclaimed duet concerts to appearances as guest soloists with the Koln, Atlanta and Detroit symphony orchestras.
Rudolph also creates visual art: painting, drawing and photography. He has published several articles and the book Pure Rhythm about rhythm repository and methodology.
Efva Lilja: Hi! What are you looking for?
Art is not the answer, but it poses questions you cannot escape. Art is not the solution to problems, but it offers alternative methodologies for exploration. Art makes us rethink our conception of the self and the world, of normalcy, provoking thoughts and actions that lift us beyond that which seems given. How does this express itself in our multi-cultural and diversified societies? The foundations of our culture are in a state of flux and art is the catalyst. There is a movement of activist artists, applying alternative strategies miles away from the established institutional formats. Their voices speak of interactive work forms. Their voices live in the very bodies that are the home of all thoughts and actions. In my keynote I will dance, talk, sing and in this way dissect the contemporary with examples of my own – and other’s – political activism through art.
Efva Lilja is an artist and researcher, working with choreography, visual art, films and writing. From 1985 to 2005 she was Artistic Director of the E.L.D. Company, producing work in more then 35 countries around the world. For this she has been decorated and received a number of prizes and awards. In 2003, she was named Professor of Choreography and 2006-2013 Vice-Chancellor of DOCH in Stockholm. Since the late 1990s she has worked with artistic research and been an active force nationally and internationally, striving to improve the conditions under which artists can undertake research in their artistic practices. During 2014 she was the Expert Advisor on artistic research at the Ministry of Education and Research in Sweden. From 2016 she is the Director of Dansehallerne in Copenhagen.

The Arts Without Borders conference will be held at the Helsinki Music Centre. The Music Centre is the home for two eminent orchestras, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki.
The Helsinki Music Centre is located in the heart of Helsinki on Mannerheimintie Street, just in front of the Houses of Parliament. The Centre’s closest neighbour is the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, and the Main Railway Station is close by. A map can be found by clicking here.
Upon arrival at the Helsinki Music Centre, please register for the conference at the lower foyer, level 1. The conference sessions at the Music Centre will be held in Black Box, Sonore, Camerata and Auditorium. On Friday Oct 21 all sessions will be at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts, including the conference dinner.
